Fire Door Inspections

Fire doors play an effective part in a building's overall passive fire safety measures, successfully preventing the spread of fire and smoke throughout a building, assuming that they have been correctly installed and maintained.

British Standard for Fire Door Inspections

We inspect and certify fire doors in line with BS 8214:2016 and relevant testing standards to ensure they perform effectively, meet legal requirements, and provide vital protection against fire and smoke.

Code of Practice - BS 8214:2016

BS 8214:2016 is the British Standard for timber-based fire door assemblies, guiding their specification, installation, and maintenance. It ensures fire doors effectively contain fire and smoke, supporting compliance with fire safety legislation. The standard covers key elements like hardware, seals, glazing, and ongoing inspections.

Understanding Fire Door Tests

BS 476 Part 22 is a British Standard for testing how long door assemblies can resist fire, while BS EN 1634 Part 1 is a European Standard that tests fire resistance and smoke control for doors and windows. Both are used to certify fire doors and ensure they provide effective protection.

What We Check During a Fire Door Inspection

Fire doors, depending on where they are installed, must be inspected by a competent person regularly. This can be 6-monthly in buildings of a higher risk, such as a hospital or care home, but this depends on the national guidance as well as your fire risk assessment and the quality of the current installations.
Door Integrity
We examine the door leaf for damage, warping, or any signs that it may no longer perform as a fire barrier.
Frame Condition
We check that the frame is correctly installed, secure, and free from gaps or damage that could affect fire resistance.
Gaps and Clearances
We measure gaps around the door (especially between the door and frame) to ensure they meet fire safety standards, typically 2–4 mm.
Intumescent Seals
We inspect the presence, condition, and correct fitting of intumescent (expanding) seals that block fire and smoke.
Smoke Seals
Where required, we check cold smoke seals for damage, compression, or gaps that would allow smoke to pass.
Fire-Rated Glazing
If the door contains glass, we ensure it’s properly fire-rated, fitted securely, and free from damage.
Hinges and Ironmongery
We check that hinges, locks, closers, and handles are fire-rated, correctly fitted, and functioning properly.
Self-Closing Device
We test the door’s ability to close fully and latch without manual assistance, as required for fire doors.
